Life moves fast, doesn’t it? One moment you’re responding to emails, the next you’re mindlessly scrolling on your phone, wondering why you feel so disconnected. If you’ve been feeling stuck, emotionally drained, or just off, know that you’re not alone—and more importantly, there are simple ways to come back home to yourself.
Mental health isn’t just about therapy or medication (though both can be deeply valuable); it’s also about the small, intentional things we do daily that ground us. Think of it as gentle maintenance for your mind and heart. So, take a breath, grab a cup of tea, and let’s explore seven simple but powerful habits that can genuinely shift your life and boost your mental health.
1. Journaling: your mind on paper
Journaling isn’t about writing perfect sentences or keeping a fancy notebook for sad days. It’s simply giving your thoughts a safe place to land. Some days, your journal might hold a flood of emotions; other days, it’s just a space to track patterns, vent, or dream.
Imagine this: You’re feeling overwhelmed after a long day. Instead of letting it simmer internally, you write:
“I feel tense and uncertain today. I think I’m scared of failing, but I don’t want to admit it.”
That moment of honesty can shift your whole evening. Journaling is a mirror—it helps you see yourself clearly, release what’s heavy and show up for yourself with more compassion.
Try this: Get a fancy notebook and write one page each night. No rules. Just let it out.
2. Screen detox: unplug to reconnect
Let’s be honest—we’re all bouncing between screens (I'm so guilty). Phone to TV, TV to laptop, back to phone. It’s exhausting, not just for your eyes but for your mind. When was the last time you sat in silence? Or noticed how the sky looked at sunset?
Disconnecting from screens helps you reconnect with yourself. You don’t need to quit cold turkey. Start small.
Try this: No phone for the first 30 minutes after waking. Instead, stretch, breathe, stare at the ceiling or sip your cappucino mindfully. Give your brain space to arrive before being bombarded.
3. Dreaming about the future: hope is healing
We all need something to look forward to—especially when life feels heavy. Don’t be afraid to dream, even wildly. You don’t have to know how it will happen. Just let your imagination roam.
Write down your dream life. Maybe you’re living by the ocean, running your own art studio, or simply waking up feeling calm and excited. Let yourself visualize it. It’s not about the outcome—it’s about reconnecting with your child-like sense of possibility.
Remember, hope isn’t naive—it’s fuel.
4. Talk it out: thoughts need air
Ever notice how a conversation with a friend can help you make sense of what you’re feeling? That’s because we think by talking. Speaking things aloud helps us clarify emotions, gain perspective and sometimes even surprise ourselves with insight.
You don’t always need advice. Sometimes, you just need someone to hear you. And if you don’t have someone in that moment, voice note yourself. Seriously. Try it. Hearing your own voice say the truth out loud is powerful.
5. Get to know your body better: tune in
Your body holds so much wisdom. But how often do we check in? Pay attention to how your body feels after spending time with certain people, eating certain foods, or being in certain environments.
Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s how you communicate with your body showing that it matters to you. That might mean a stretch session, a walk in the sun, or choosing rest over hustle. The more you honor your body’s signals, the more aligned and empowered you’ll feel, I promise!
6. Schedule time for joy: don’t wait for it
Joy doesn’t have to be spontaneous, or be found in some distant future that's out of our control . You can plan for it. List out the things that make you smile: dancing like you just don't care, painting, baking all weekend, walking barefoot in the grass, rewatching your favorite comedy. Then, schedule them like appointments.
Yes—put joy on your calendar.
Even 10 minutes of joy a day adds up. Life isn’t just about surviving—it’s about feeling alive am I right?
7. Look good, feel good: dress for your mood
This isn’t about fashion trends or attention seeking. It’s about feeling like yourself. Wear what makes you feel comfortable, confident and cared for. Even if you’re just at home, changing out of your 3 days old pajamas into something fresh can change your energy.
Small effort, big shift.
Feeling good in your own skin isn’t vanity—it’s self-respect my dear.
Bonus: get busy living
Let’s be real—problems won’t ever completely disappear, you solve one problem and in swoops the next. But that doesn’t mean you should wait to start living fully. Stop waiting for the perfect time, the right mood, or more confidence. Just start!
Say yes to the things that light you up. Take the class. Start the project. Reach out to that friend. Show up messy, but show up.
You’re here now. Life is short—but it’s also yours.
Rounding up
Whatever season you’re in right now, I hope these habits serve as gentle reminders that you have more power and control over your life than you think. It’s not about changing everything overnight—it’s about choosing one small thing today.
Start there. You've got this. 💛
